Seasonal Delights: Rethinking Thanksgiving

Seasonal Delights: Rethinking Thanksgiving

As we head into the holiday season and the pandemic continues, our traditional gatherings with friends and family are considered high risk by the CDC. Even a moderate risk outdoor dinner becomes high risk when you consider that PNW storms notoriously happen on Thanksgiving Day. It is time to rethink how we celebrate Thanksgiving. Here are a few ideas:

Order a Feast

If you typically go to someone else’s home for the holiday, consider ordering a Heat and Serve Thanksgiving Dinner from Lombardi’s. Order ahead and pick up your dinner with heating instructions. Each dinner is enough to serve 4 people and even comes with green bean casserole.

If you want to make your own sides, J & L BBQ with locations in Everett and Snohomish can provide a smoked turkey.

A La Carte

Since you are probably not feeding as many people this year, consider supporting local businesses by picking up a little bit here and there.

Instead of a huge turkey, maybe a chicken will do or consider Del Fox Custom Meats in Stanwood for one or two smoked turkey legs. If Stanwood is too far out of the way, another option is Kelso Meats in Snohomish.

The New Mexicans won’t be taking pie orders this year, so what about stopping in and picking up a few pieces? If you really must have a full pie, check out Snohomish Pie Co.

Stop in at the Sno-Isle Food Coop and grab some roasting vegetables. Toss them with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and roast them in the oven.

You must order dinner rolls from Choux Choux Bakery because they are offering semolina rosemary rolls, delicata pull-apart rolls and loaves of the Pain de Campagne. How will you ever decide which ones to get?  Snohomish Bakery is also a good go-to place for dinner rolls.

C. Vines or Port Gardner Bay Winery can help you pick out the perfect wine pairing for your feast. For a one-stop-shop with many beverage options, order online for pickup at Sage and Cinder. They offer a selection of beer, wine, cocktail kits, mixed cocktails, and even some delicious-sounding non-alcoholic drinks.

Non-Turkey-Turk’y

If it is vegetarian or vegan options you are looking for, Trader Joe’s is traditionally a hot spot for picking up some Turk’y, but they are not offering online ordering, delivery or curbside pick up and are usually line-up-on-the-street-busy before Thanksgiving. You might consider going to a less crowded traditional grocery store for these types of items.

Make sure to call ahead or preorder online to get dibs on the food items you would like and double-check business hours before you get in the car.

What we eat and who we spend time with will likely look a lot different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still connect with our loved ones. Consider a virtual dinner party on Zoom or just giving someone you love and miss a call to find out how things are going.

Cheers to a Happy Thanksgiving!
