Seasonal Delights: Arbor Day 2021

Seasonal Delights: Arbor Day 2021

Living here in the great PNW, you must have some appreciation for trees. They are the backdrop of our lives, giving us the “evergreen” that makes visitors say “wow, it’s so green here.”

Did you know that Everett has been recognized as a Tree City USA since 1993? One requirement for continued status is that we observe Arbor Day. Typically there is a tree planting event, but because of the pandemic, it has been canceled for the second year. Instead of a special event, here are some things you can do to honor the trees of Everett.

Tree Scavenger Hunt

Have you ever heard of a champion tree? Well, a champion tree is the largest of its species and Everett has twelve trees that are the largest in Washington State. Check out the Live in Everett blog to learn more and get a list of addresses so you can track them down.

Tree Planting

Trees are beneficial in so many ways including purifying the air and cooling us down. Watch City of Everett Arborist Brad Cooper plant a city tree; and learn about selecting, planting and taking care of trees from The Arbor Day Foundation Tree Planting & Care Guide

Tree Storytime

The Everett Public Library is celebrating the beauty and importance of trees through special stories and movement activities for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. You can view the storytimes on the EPL Stories Online YouTube Channel

Tree Crafts

Stop in at Forest Park on Friday, April 30 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and pick up a fun nature theme craft kit for the kiddos to make a toilet paper roll owl or a painted handprint cherry tree. The supplies provided by Parks and Community Services are limited so if you don’t get a kit, you can download the directions here and use supplies you have at home.

Looking for another way to honor Everett’s trees? When was the last time you spent time really looking at and feeling gratitude for the trees around you? Why not step out your front door, look up at the trees and do just that?
