Seasonal Delights: Happiness in Our Backyard

Seasonal Delights: Happiness in Our Backyard

“I don't have to take a trip around the world or be on a yacht in the Mediterranean to have happiness. I can find it in the little things, like looking out into my backyard and seeing deer in the fields.” - Queen Latifah

We are so blessed to live in this little corner of the world. Living through this pandemic and keeping close to home hasn’t been too much of a burden. From field to forest, river to ocean, we have so many beautiful locales to visit for a little respite from our stressful lives. Here are some ideas where you can get out in nature, relax and find a little happiness.

FIELD

“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.” - Eleonora Duse

It is the perfect time of year to head out to the fields and pick some pumpkins. The pumpkin patches are open and following social distancing guidelines. On your drive, make sure to notice the rolling fields, lush with green and the last patches of summer flowers.

FOREST

“Who else goes to the woods to find peace only to discover themself in the process? I find forests unclutter the mind with each breath the trees afford me.” - Michael Poeltl

We have many forests, near and not very far. Take a stroll on wooded trails through Forest Park or Big Gulch. If you are looking for a stroll with a paved path start at McCollum Park and take the North Creek Trail as it meanders through old-growth trees. For more of an adventure, drive out on Highway 92 past Lake Stevens for some beautiful fall color or check out the comprehensive Washington Trails Association website and plan a hike.

RIVER

“Learn from a river; obstacles may force it to change its course, but never its destination.” ― Matshona Dhliwayo

With the Snohomish, Lowell and Langus riverfront trails, there is no shortage of lovely river strolls. If you want to head out a little further, drive east on Highway 2 and you’ll find some beautiful views of the Skykomish River.

OCEAN

“If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both salt water mixed with air.” - Nayyirah Waheed

How fortunate we are to live on Possession Sound. There are several access points to get your toes in the sand and breathe in the ocean air, including Lighthouse Park, Howarth Park, and Picnic Point. For a little longer trip, adventure north to Kayak Point

With this abundance of nature to enjoy, what are you waiting for? Get outside and find some happiness.
