Everett Archives: Historic Van Valey House Opens as Museum

The Van Valey house has been a staple of Everett's historical landmarks for many years. Thanks to the Everett Museum of History, it is now a museum open to the public.

We've written about the Van Valey House before. Built in 1914 of local timber, the home's original cost was $5,000. The Van Valey House was initially an office for A.L. Van Valey, an Everett businessman who ran the Van Valey Bottling Company.

The home has been used for many purposes in its 100+ year history, but perhaps the most exciting of all is that you can now tour the home. What better way to learn both about the house and Everett's history?

The Everett Museum of History has done a wonderful job furnishing the Van Valey with period-appropriate furnishings. Many personal items are from families who lived in the home.

You'll find Ed Morrow's shoe shine kit in the primary bedroom. Down the hall in "Rachel's Room," you will see how a young girl's room would have been decorated in the 1920s. In the living room, there are collectible eggs, political buttons, wood carvings by Ed Morrow, and much more.

There is also an entire room dedicated to Henry M. Jackson, where you can learn about his work in public service, human rights, international relations, and more. On the day we visited, we were delighted to see Henry M. Jackson's daughter sharing stories about her father.

The Everett Museum of History staff was very helpful and informative in sharing about the beautiful home. You might plan a quick walk-through to enjoy the beauty, but to soak in all the history, you will likely want to spend at least an hour, as there is a lot to look at and read while you explore the Van Valey.

The Van Valey is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It is free to tour the home, with a suggested donation of $5 per adult and $2 per student.
